Located between Rockport and Ipswich, a little more than an hour North of Boston, is the quaint seaside port of Norbury. Norbury is the kind of place where neighbors look out for each other and gather in camaraderie. Established in 1730 by Admiral Sir Charles Norbury of the Royal Navy, as an outpost for Naval operations. However, it didn't take long before the citizens of England got wind of this newly founded paradise, with its ample fishing grounds and the (than) remote islands just off shore.
Humans aren't the only creature who has taken advantage of the plethora of fish - a massive sea serpent is said to be spotted offshore enjoying a good meal. It is even said that "Norbie" as the locals have nicknamed the serpent has even cooperated with local fishermen.
Norbury is approximately sixteen miles from Ipswich. Due to its close proximity to its neighbor, Norbury was also caught up in the mayhem of the 17th Century witch trials - however, not as many were lost.
Everyones heard of the Boston Tea Party but have you heard of the Norbury Tea Party? Boston wasn't the only harbor to take part in the dumping of tea into a bay. Being the quaint town it is - residence where happy to let Boston take all the heat.
During the American War of Independence Norbury was briefly occupied by British Forces before the Continentals regained control. After which point it saw a lot of action due to its proximity to Boston.
Like a majority of towns and cities during the American Civil War Norbury was not exempt from the turbulence and heartache of the darkest time in American history. A majority of Norbury's able bodied men found themselves drafted into the U.S. Navy, due to their previous experience at sea.
The modern Norbury, is a quaint but active fishing village. Main Street Norbury is full of quaint seaside shops and eateries - from a charming used bookstore to a modern coffee shop with high speed internet! The dockside is the home to some of the best clam chowder in New England (the good kind with cream, not the tomatoe kind).
The story of Norbury is still unfolding...
